Hi folks, will you please introduce yourselves in two lines?
Yu-Chen: "I'm a digital engineer who is deeply in love with strategy games, and Burano is my first-designed game."
Eros: "I'm a full-time boardgame designer, and formed up a company Emperors4 Games with some partners two years ago. We have a website witch introduces boardgames and game shops in Taiwan"
You designed Burano, but this isn’t Eros’ first rodeo, you were already a game designer, how did you two meet?
There are many opening boardgame groups in Taipei, and they hold a routine of playing boardgame every weekend. We met in one of the groups named "ROCK", and we have been in relationship for more than two years.
Burano is set in Italy, how did you come up with this setting? Have you ever been there?
A friend of ours has been in Burano and other places in Italy last year. But we've never been there.
The mechanic came up first, the stacking colorful cubes. Those cubes look like colorful houses, I knew there are many color houses in Europe, but I was still surprised that there is an island named Burano which perfectly match what we were looking for.
Did the mechanic come first or the setting did?
We just answered above, the mechanic came first.
I can see from Jungle Rumble, Eros likes using cubes in games not just as a marker representing a worker or something like that, but as a building element, this is very interesting. Were you inspired by another game or maybe something you used to do as a kid?
Actually, there's lots of game using cubes as building elements and something besides a worker, like Terra Mystica (the bridge), and Santiago (the waterway). One of the aim of designing Burano was that we wanted to create a 3D vision and 3D strategy game. And we chose the toy bricks we played as kids by intuition.
What are the games you think most influenced you while you were designing Burano?
There are too many games we've played so that there are too many influences. However, we are mostly influenced by Stefan Feld undoubtedly (cause we are fans of him). You can see pictures on BGG that we used components of Trajan and The Speicherstadt as components of our prototype.
I love the artwork, can you tell us about the process that lead to the final graphics?
[If you have images from a prototype that would be quite interesting]
The processing of the artwork cost a lot of patience and carefulness. Luckily, there were an awesome editor and an superior painter.
Will there be an Italian edition of Burano anytime soon?
Many Euro publishers has contacted us recently. By now we don't have a final conclusion yet.
When you come visit us in Italy pizza is on me (airfare not included!), you can pick your favourite one, which one do you choose? [since my blog is http://geek.pizza the pizza related question is really unavoidable for all our guests! ;) ]
Yu Chen: "Four-cheese pizza and Margherita are my favorite. But I'm more interested in the fresh-made pasta and gelato in Italy." :P
